BEGINNER'S SEWING - INTRODUCTION TO SEWING MACHINES

WEDNESDAY 10th MAY

Do you own a sewing machine but don't know how to use it?

This 3-hour class will introduce you to the basics to kick-start your hobby and help you gain confidence.

During the session you will learn about machine safety and the machine's different functions (basic models only). We will learn how to thread the machine, wind the bobbin, change the tension, the function of the feed dogs and the uses of different kinds of needles. We will practice speed control by sewing in straight lines, and go on to learn about curves.

Having gained confidence we will go on to create seams and learn neatening techniques, including overlocking, finishing off, reverse stitching and top-stitching. Finally we will look at troubleshooting common problems.

We have a number of machines but if you wish to bring your own along, please do so, not forgetting the handbook.

£35.00           1pm - 4pm

Class is limited to 8 people

BEGINNERS SEWING BEE

THURSDAY 26 MAY

If you have a little sewing experience or have previously joined us on the Introduction to Sewing Machines class, this full day's workshop is ideal.

During the day we will learn about working with different fabrics, uses of interfacing, curved seams and layering, basic shaping and positioning of darts, how to interpret a paper pattern, laying out and cutting out your fabric following the grain and selvedge instructions.

We will then construct a simple garment with a choice of a lightweight kimono or a straight skirt, so please bring along approx 2m of a fabric of your choice. Suitable fabrics are lightweight cottons for the kimono (not stretch) and light to medium weight fabrics for the skirt (not stretch). Please choose a plain or all-over design, not stripes or plaids. If in doubt please ring for advice.
